America is a nightmare for the disabled.
being disabled in the united states is a sentence for unlimited inconvenience
Handicapped
It’s a word we have all heard before, yes?
Don’t take the handicapped section of the parking lot, the bathroom, etc.
Well, handicap means “hand in cap”. Why? Because the only choice that most physically and mentally disabled people could make during the 1504.
Now, while America may not be shackling people, we do make it incredible difficult to live with any type of disability in this country.
Most people know that mental healthcare is a nightmare in this country, with prices of prescription medicine out of the stratosphere, and a lack of class understanding for why a poor person may be depressed, the cycle will likely continue.
This is one of the massive reasons we require a single-payer, universal healthcare system. Not only is it cheaper for the country, but it allows for people with issues to not have to go into debt in order to pay for a therapist.
Healthcare is also important for the physically disabled.
Being stuck in a wheelchair is expensive. An old individual- who may have issues regarding their leg muscles that leads to a need for a wheelchair- in a lot of cases have issues with insurers covering these types of costs, especially if the companies can find that there is no “need”.
You better hope that you want a wheelchair and not a leg that works well, because those can run you up to 70,000 dollars. The issue with that price tag is that the cost of production is nowhere near that price— it is big companies taking advantage of the disadvantaged.
Lastly, we need to talk about infrastructure- or the lack thereof.
America has a big walking problem: not even the able can do it.
Imagine for a moment, you’re going downtown. You simply what to do what all others do: take a walk through the city.
Then you realized you’re stranded. There is no way for you to get off the sidewalk because they decided that since most people can just take the step, what’s the point in spending the extra money.
This exact issue is why whenever my grandparents go anywhere, they require their hand to be held just to make it inside of restaurants, stores, or suffer the consequences of a fall (which for many can cause serious health issues).
We need to advocate for better outcomes for our individuals with disabilities.
