rest in power, aaron.
There is no photos of the self-immolation inside of this post, as well I have posted some links to pro-Palestinian causes at the bottom (credit: Joshua P. Hill)
“I'm about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers it's not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.” - Aaron Bushnell
All we want is peace. All we have wanted is peace.
Fire. Flames burn throughout Gaza, leading to the deaths of women, children, toddlers. Futures undone at the hands of the Israeli state with the help of the United States. Over 30,000 have been bombed, starved, buried, stabbed, and burned.
Self-immolation is a form of extreme protest, one that is only used sparingly in desperate situations. These are not suicides, they are sacrifices.
In almost theatrical fashion, even when men light themselves on fire in the streets begging for a stop to violence— the media ignores it.
Don’t believe me? Let’s look at some headlines:
USA TODAY- Air Force member Aaron Bushnell dies after setting himself on fire near Israeli Embassy
NYT- Man Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy in Washington, Air Force Says
WSJ- U.S. Air Force Member Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy
Notice a theme with these? Not one time did they say why- why did he do such a thing?
They already knew the answer, have no doubt about it. You see, they had the video of his last words:
“Free Palestine”
He cried his protest through the flames, begging in his last moments for the end of the genocide happening in Gaza— so that no more people would have to die in the way he did. Aaron went out with the hope that the last body buried in this conflict would be his.
We should try our best to uphold that.
