I am about to do what no other page would want you to: leave my page and go make some calls.
wait—i have to tell you where to go!
first… search
For me, I found a Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, and many other local groups such as Starkville Strong who help underprivileged people in my area.
second… go meet with these groups and volunteer!
Getting involved is going to make you feel better, and help whoever it is out a whole lot! Handing out food, getting people housed, and making sure your community is taken care of is vital to building a coalition of likeminded people.
third… build political connections
This is where you really make the phone calls: tell your Mayor, your city council, etc. what you are seeing on the ground and demand better conditions for the constituents in your area. If someone answers, get to know them and understand where you agree and disagree- and try to be an influence on them, not a nuisance.
fourth… all of the above + more organizing!
You need a union— get together using the skills you have built and form organizing committees in order to get your demands met. You can reach out to groups like EWOC if you need help with the legal side of union organizing, or just need more outside help from a larger source.
We can only do this if we do it together!
