Why does everyone seem to like Luigi Mangione?
The "CEO Killer" has been caught, so why aren't people happy about it?
As of about an hour ago from writing, Luigi Mangione has been charged by the state of New York for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He’s being held without bail after being caught by someone at McDonalds (the current theory is that it was an “elderly patron”, though that’s not confirmed).
But frankly, you probably know most of that right? You’ve likely looked at his Twitter posts and LinkedIn and— if you’re like the many that interacted with the official UHC post— not very saddened by the death of this CEO.
It seems extreme, the way that people are reacting in favor of vigilantism and the murder of another person. Ignoring his frankly stellar looks, he still did kill an innocent person, so why is he getting this positive treatment?
Lets start here: One third of Americans live with medical debt, and quarter of those people owe more than $5,000.
In a country that has the highest GDP of any nation, we have significantly worse health outcomes than other nations— with the US having a life expectancy almost 10 years lower than many other developed nations.
Further, we also spend double what the average developed nation spends when it comes to healthcare. 🔽
Seeing these numbers, we are starting to get the idea— but how does insurance providers like UHC play into this?
It’s because despite you needing care, they need their profits more:
The practice of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurance company in the country, of denying care to their payers on a consistent basis is what makes them billions of dollars in profits— and what allows them to pay a CEO like Brian Thompson over $10 million in 2023.
Record profits for healthcare corporations, despite the US government spending double what other nations do on medical care, just doesn’t sit right with people.
I don’t know what Luigi was thinking when he shot Brian Thompson, and that’s not the point of this. To effectively use the anger we have towards the healthcare industry we need to tell our Congress to join the rest of the developed world and make healthcare a human right.
