Above is a photo of Bernie Sanders, the well known yet controversial “Democratic Socialist” of American Politics. In 2016 and 2020, he was pushed out by the political establishment of the Democratic Party- which arguably led to the creation of Trumpism in the United States.
Bernie ran on Universal Schooling, Medicare for All, and Housing for All. He argued that these things are things the government should provide to everyone on the basis of their humanity, and they are needed in order to equally pursue the American Dream: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The Democratic establishment disagrees with that notion. They believe that individuals make good or bad decisions, and that leads them to where they are: whether that is the street or a mansion. With little exception, they uphold billionaire interests and further the expansion of Capitalism.
Of course, the Republicans are no different in this sense: the Republicans only differ in their messaging. Trump won by convincing the poorest people in this nation that a billionaire would save them, that he would protect the working class. This wasn’t true in his first term, and it won’t be this time either.
The issue for Democrats is that they don’t have a working class message. They are seen as elites, who uphold the rich class and do not talk about the working poor as much as Republicans do. It’s lost them multiple elections, yet many within the establishment are quick to blame anybody but themselves.
When we look at the election results, the winner was nobody. 40% of the voting population did not cast a ballot, despite it being the “election of our lifetime” (just like the one before that, etc.)
Furthermore, the Democratic Party has made no changes despite losing the election. They put everyone back in the same spot, and now are voting for right-wing immigration bills.
So if none of what we decided to do is working, why doesn’t the party take a better look at candidates like Bernie Sanders, who simply want corporations to pay their fair share?
Well that’s because they want the money.
These Congresspeople spend unbelievable amounts of money in the stock market, and make millions while in office. It isn’t in their interest to ever give in to popular demand.
How can we change this?
We have to start small, unfortunately. Start talking on social media, start a club in your city where you talk about political issues.
Start talking about why government isn’t working: because Capitalism keeps our politicians wealthy. Advocate with friends for bans on stock trading, send letters to your representative.
The best choice: run for office, even on the local level.
The more people we have in government that don’t support this legal corruption, the bigger chance we have to change it. Be the change you want to see in the world.
So what should government do? It should take care of everybody, and make sure we all have a chance at dignified living.
